The one entry with a categorical answer that needs no judgement about the person.
- What it literally says
- That the person contacting you works for the platform.
- What it actually means
- Somebody watched a public place for people describing problems and contacted one of them. That sequence is the method and it is almost the whole method.
- What it does not mean
- That the channel could be genuine and you have to work out whether this instance is. No market runs support or announcements on a messaging app, a chat group, an email address or a forum account.
- What to do
- Nothing. Take no address, no instruction and no reassurance from the conversation.
- If it looks different
- It does not need to. The channel is the answer regardless of how established the account looks.
Why the channel cannot be genuine
It is structural rather than a preference. A messaging platform is a company that identifies its users and can be compelled to produce records. A market operating there would be creating exactly the record its whole architecture exists to avoid, for its most engaged users. That is why this entry gets a flat answer while most of the book gives you a judgement to make.
The shapes it takes
| Presents as | What it is |
|---|---|
| Support staff | Contacts you after you describe a problem publicly. Most common by a wide margin. |
| An announcement channel | Reposts genuine notices accurately for months, building a record, until it posts one that is theirs. |
| A mirror bot | Automation posting current addresses correctly, until it does not. Automation gets trusted more than people. |
| A helpful member | Answers ordinary questions in public, then offers to sort you out privately. |
| A vendor | Impersonating a seller rather than the platform, aimed at buyers with an order in flight. |
What put you in front of them
Describing your own situation in specific terms somewhere public. That is worth noticing afterwards, because it converts a general audience into a targeted one, and it is the part readers can actually change.
