Not a scam by itself, and worth an entry because of what tends to follow it.
- What it literally says
- That you are regarded as reliable.
- What it actually means
- Usually nothing much. Sometimes it is the setup for a request that would be harder to make cold.
- What it does not mean
- That you have a status, a benefit, or an obligation. There is no trusted buyer tier that entitles anybody to ask you for anything.
- What to do
- Note whether a request follows within the same message or the next one. That ordering is the signal.
- If it looks different
- Praise plus a request to release funds early, pay directly, or move the conversation elsewhere.
Why it works
Because reciprocity is close to automatic. Somebody who has just described you favourably has created a small social debt, and declining their next request feels like withdrawing the compliment rather than declining a transaction.
The specific requests it precedes are the ones that need a reason: releasing funds ahead of delivery, settling outside the platform arrangement, or continuing a conversation somewhere the platform cannot see.
Separating courtesy from setup
| Shape | Reading |
|---|---|
| Thanks, straightforward order | Ordinary courtesy. Nothing follows. |
| Praise, then a question about your history | Assessment. Neutral, and worth noticing. |
| Praise, then a request in the same message | The request is the message. The praise is the wrapper. |
| Praise from somebody you have not dealt with | There is no history to praise, so it is doing something else. |
What you actually owe
Nothing beyond the transaction. Being pleasant costs nothing and being obliged is a different thing entirely. A vendor who is genuinely good to deal with will not be surprised when you keep an order inside the platform arrangement, because they know what the alternative request looks like from your side.
